Happy New Year and Welcome to the 2021 BOD!
Where does one start in ushering in a new year in a time such as this? While just looking forward would be the easy thing to do, acknowledging and learning from the past is an important part of moving forward. 2020 was for most an incredibly tumultuous year and for those who lost a loved one, struggled financially, experienced health issues or simply just missed being connected to friends and family, we acknowledge your loss.
The lessons learned in 2020 were many but by far the biggest and most impactful were few. The importance of a solid foundation: no business or individual can weather a storm of historic proportions and come out the other side without a solid foundation. Having a workforce that is cross trained so you can operate with a significantly reduced workforce. Having a 3-month cash reserve. Having a culture in which change is embraced. These will all greatly impact surviving and succeeding. Recognizing that what you think you know or what you think may happen is most likely going to surprise you, be able to react to a changing landscape. Who would have known that the financial, housing, building, and contractors markets as well as so many others would do as well as they did? And maybe the most valuable lesson of all is in finding that perfect balance between work and home.
In 2019 the BOD was born and being part of the inaugural board was an amazing journey. Watching 10 diverse businesses and individuals come together and put aside any sense of being competitors and sharing best practices and lessons learned over decades of combined experiences, all for the betterment of the industry, was truly amazing. We can't thank them enough for showing us the way.
I'm certain that our 2021 board will take the baton that has been passed to them and run the next leg of the race with the same level of commitment and passion and I'm honored to be part of that process. So here's to 2021; may it bring you all only the joys that life has to offer and while never easy, remember the journey is as important as reaching your desired destination.
